K-root Reachability in the Middle East and Central Asia

The RIPE NCC operates K-root in multiple locations around the world, many of them in Europe and the Middle East. The people behind this service are doing an amazing job of keeping K-root accessible. There are several K-root nodes 1 hosted by local network operators to improve the user experience. Figure 1: K-root nodes in Europe and the Middle East (see interactive map ) Given the current state of Internet connectivity in the Middle East, I thought it would be interesting to measure response times from K-root throughout countries in the Middle East using the RIPE Atlas infrastructure.

Choosing a public DNS resolver

Overview While most Internet users are not aware of the importance of DNS resolution in their overall web browsing experience, they often complain about shortage of bandwidth when experiencing sluggish Internet connectivity. It is no surprise that most of the service providers also ignore this fact by redirecting their customer DNS traffic to public DNS servers. Measurement I’ve seen this mostly happening to Google’s Public DNS servers. Doing a quick test, it turned out that choosing DNS Public DNS Servers is not a wise choice:
